A municipal agency whose role is to protect the architectural integrity of a community through covenants limiting the types of building materials. The boards are comprised primarily of people with expertise in art, architecture and planning. Local laws can give architectural review boards the authority to review building plans and specifications; these boards can withhold approval of building permits if a proposed construction will be very dissimilar to or inappropriate compared with other structures nearby.
