BFE is the elevation of surface water resulting from a flood that has a 1% chance of equaling or exceeding that level in any given year. The BFE is shown on FEMAs Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) for some zones. The construction of new residential construction must adhere to the base flood elevation guidelines to ensure it is adequately protected from potential floodwaters.
